After a long career in global health, with assignments in several countries and diverse settings, working as a public health scientist, he served as the Italian Science Attaché to the United States and as Director General for Preventive Health at the Italian Ministry of Health, acting as Italy’s Chief Medical Officer until his appointment as WHO Assistant Director-General for Strategic Initiatives in Geneva. He has worked in development and humanitarian contexts, including in the former Yugoslavia during the war, in the Middle East as the multilateral “shepherd” for health in the Israeli–Palestinian peace talks, and in Yemen, Libya, and other war-torn areas. He has addressed noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), health system inequities, migrant health, health security, and vaccines. He led the Italian technical delegations during the German G20 and the Italian G7 (2016–2017). He served as the WHO Director-General’s Special Envoy to Italy in support of the country’s COVID-19 response programme. He is currently Director General of CITIES+ in Rome, General Manager of Al Sayyab Hospital in Basra, Iraq, and a consultant to several Italian regional health departments.
