After his MD degree from Basel University, Patrik Michel has undergone postgraduate training in South Africa, Boston, and Lausanne. He is deputy head of the Neurology Service, head of the Stroke Center in the Neurosciences Department of the Lausanne University Hospital, and professor of neurology at the University of Lausanne.

His research interests involve clinical stroke syndromes, acute stroke management, CT-based perfusion and arterial imaging, and stroke prognosis. He has founded and directs the Acute STroke Registry and Analysis of Lausanne (ASTRAL) which serves as basis of multiple research projects and international collaborations.

He is participating as investigator or steering committee member in multiple preventive, diagnostic and treatment trials and several stroke registries. He is actively involved in the Swiss Stroke Society, the European Stroke Organisation and the World Stroke Organisation. He lectures on multiple aspects of stroke at locally, at national and international conferences, and at the European Master’s Programme for Stroke Medicine. He has published multiple articles and book chapters on stroke syndromes, neuroradiological topics, and stroke management.
