Margus Lember

Margus Lember is a professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Tartu, Estonia since 2000 and Chief physician of Internal Medicine, Tartu University Hospital since 2023.
Since 2025 he is the Secretary General of EFIM.
He graduated from the University of Tartu in 1985, specialist in internal Medicine in 1991. He received PhD at the University of Tartu in 1990 and DrMed Sci at the University of Tampere, Finland in 1998. He is Fellow EFIM(Hon) and Fellow of ACP.
He is a former president of the Estonian Society of Internal Medicine (2004-2016), Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Tartu University Hospital (2000-2023), Vice-dean on residency training at the University of Tartu 2006-2016 and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tartu 2016-2023.
The main areas of research have been devoted to the health outcomes in chronic diseases, metabolic diseases, reforms in health care and medical education. More than 200 publications in international and national peer-reviewed journals. The main teaching responsibilities are in teaching physical examination and communication skills for medical students, general internal medicine for residents, methodology of research and publications for PhD students. Supervised 11 PhD thesis. Has been a consultant of the World Bank Health projects in medical education and primary care in several countries of Europe and Asia.
