Dagmar Führer-Sakel, M.D., Ph.D. was the first woman appointed to a W3 Professorship and Chair of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology in Germany at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Since 2011, she has served as Director of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism and heads the Academic Division of Clinical Chemistry at University Hospital Essen. From 2018 to 2022, she was Vice-Rector for Research, Career Development, and Science Transfer at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
She currently serves as President of the German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM) and is a member of the Scientific Board of the German Medical Association, as well as commissions of the German Research Foundation (DFG), shaping national research and academic medicine strategy.
An internationally recognized expert in thyroid research and endocrine oncology, she has led major collaborative initiatives, including the DFG Collaborative Research Centre / Transregio 296 “LOCOTACT,” the Priority Programme “Thyroid Trans Act,” and the Clinician Scientist Programme UMEA. Her work integrates molecular hormone research with translational and clinical innovation in endocrinology and digital diabetology.
Prof. Führer-Sakel received her M.D. from Justus Liebig University Giessen, with clinical training in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France, and her Ph.D. from the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff. Her postgraduate training and habilitation were conducted at the University of Leipzig.
