Prof. Clara Balsano is Full Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of L’Aquila, where she also directs the School of Specialization in Emergency and Urgent Medicine. She serves as Head of the Geriatrics Department at the SS. Filippo and Nicola Hospital in Avezzano, where she established a dedicated outpatient clinic for chronic liver diseases.
Prof. Clara Balsano graduated cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from Sapienza University of Rome and specialized in Internal Medicine. Appointed Associate Professor in 1993 and Full Professor in 2006, she has held several leadership positions, including Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Pathology at the National Research Council (CNR), and has coordinated national multicenter research projects.
Her research focuses on hepatology, virology, immunology, sarcopenia, and artificial intelligence in medicine. Initially centered on molecular and immunological mechanisms of chronic viral and autoimmune liver diseases, her work has progressively integrated machine learning and large language models for diagnostic and decision-support applications, particularly in liver diseases. She is also engaged in translational research on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), hepatocellular carcinoma, sarcopenia, and frailty in older adults.
She has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and maintains active international research collaborations.
